Artist’s Statement
I have worked with Julien Wilson in my role as a Music Recording Engineer and his role as a master Saxophonist/Woodwind player.  When he talked about his new instrument arriving, a Bass Clarinet, and I was able to hear it on a session not long after, I started thinking about including it in a portrait of Julien.  Woodwind instruments are such involved and complex-looking devices and the mastering of them can take many years. Silent inanimate objects, in the hands of a player like Julien, come alive and become a true extension of him.

This portrait was submitted for the 2020 Archibald Prize.
