Artist’s Statement
Simone Thomson is a proud Wurrundjeri, Woi-Wurrung and Yorta – Yorta woman and her art tells the creation and dreaming stories of Naarm. (Melbourne).

The title Riverwoman refers to her ancestral bond with the Birrarung (Yarra) and Dhungala (Murray Rivers), and the waterways that often meander through her works.

When painting portraits, I look for the contradictions that will express my sitter’s personality and history.  Simone is a modern sophisticated woman, as well as the teller of ancient stories and I loved the contrast of her simple dress and jewellery with that magnificent emu-feather necklace.
