MEGAN WITH ROSE
56 w x 76 h cm
I took the opportunity while Megan was studying for her VCE to try and get a satisfying portrait of her. We were in the country; it was beautiful Spring weather; she’d been for a walk around the garden, bringing back a rose, then decided to do a little bit of embroidery while she read. I attempted to capture this moment knowing the time was short as I had been trying for a few days to capture her. And had learnt that, at 17, she was prepared to give a little time, but when it was up, that was it. She was off to a new pose, new book.
It is a fun challenge to do a portrait, not only are the colours and nuances of the watercolour medium so different to landscape painting, but the interaction with the sitter can be a really important and enjoyable part of the project. When you think of it, how often can a person sit doing nothing else but be the centre of attention and talk.
