Artist’s Statement
My portrait depicts the inner game of music.  Music comes from a connection to an inward focus.  It is the musician who has the gift of refined listening; the key to imparting the aesthetic of music.

Michael is playing a ‘G’ chord while Grouse, his loyal kelpie is listening intently.  I wanted this visual to appear audible for the viewer to listen and also become absorbed.  Music and Grouse are representative of Michael’s compassion connected with the drive, courage, dedication and focus when he has to tackle the big stuff. Michael’s concerns for the environment, climate action and communities are the important life issues which led him to becoming elected as Councilor, Deputy Mayor and currently two terms as Mayor of Bass Coast Shire.

Since they are such hard workers, I was impressed both Michael and Grouse could sit still; they were both very co-operative sitters!
