Rainbow Serpent Tracks

Acrylic on Stretched Canvas
122.5 cm h x 96 cm w
$5,280

The spirit creator called out to rainbow snake who was asleep in the earth. When Gane heard his name, he lifted his head and made his way to the surface looking out to the dry land. He went looking for the old woman who was searching for yams with her digging stick, he was asked to bring her back to safety. He followed her journey tracks in the dirt and slid across the land pushing earth up with his belly creating mountains and valleys in winding crevices. As he travelled across country, his beautiful bright colours spread across the land and to all creatures. Creator Spirit called to him in a loud voice … thunder cracked; lightning flashed across the sky. Rain fell for days filling rainbow snake’s crevices – they became the rivers and waterholes, part of our vast land.
This is the story passed down to me from my mother and Elder, Aunty Zeta Thomson. I pay my respects to her.
